Course Objectives

  • To explore a variety of approaches for successfully completing each part of the IELTS exam; academic writing, reading, listening and speaking.
  • To develop skills essential for increasing academic performance under exam conditions.
  • To familiarise yourself with the IELTS examination through a series of mock tests and written assessment.
  • To work towards expanding your knowledge and ability to structure, edit and respond to written academic materials.
  • To improve your ability to present clear, concise arguments in both speaking and essay writing.
  • To improve all-round confidence in using English communicatively.

Exam Skills: Academic Listening and Speaking

Students will prepare for the Speaking test, which comprises a face-to-face interview (11-14 minutes) with an examiner. Students will develop key skills to maximise their spoken performance in all of the assessed areas: fluency and coherence, lexical resource, pronunciation and grammatical range. In addition students will also have regular examination practice for the four sections of the Listening test, to enhance their ability to recognise the opinions and purpose of the speaker, as well as evaluating factual information that is provided.

Exam Skills: Academic Reading

The Academic Reading section of the IELTS exam is 60 minutes long and requires students to read three authentic text passages, whilst completing a range of tasks in the given timeframe. The IELTS Preparation course will aid students as they read a variety of academic texts, from descriptive and factual to discursive and analytical. They will also learn how to maximise their efforts within the time allocated and develop their written accuracy, so as not to lose marks in the exam for incorrect spelling and grammar.

Exam Skills: Academic Writing

The Academic Writing paper involves two written tasks: Task 1 requires students to summarise, describe or explain the information presented in a graph, table, chart or diagram and Task 2 asks students to write a short essay in response to a point of view or argument. This course will enable students to improve their essay structure and style, their formation of clear and cogent arguments and their ability to organise their ideas. They will learn the best approaches to these types of tasks, so that they are able to accurately answer the various questions in an effective and efficient way.
