Law is the perfect elective for any aspiring barristers, solicitors and lawyers. Students will develop their understanding of core concepts in the theory and practice of law, discovering how lawyers function in the fields of criminal, familial, tort and contract law. They will also learn how argument is best deduced and applied in both theoretical and practical case studies, an integral skill for any successful legal career. By the end of the course students will have developed a case for the defence or prosecution, in a mock legal trial which sees them presenting their case to an audience.
Oxford College Summer School’s Law programme is a unique two week residential programme situated in the heart of historic Oxford.
We have created our Law programme at Oxford College Summer School for the barristers, solicitors and judges of tomorrow. In this programme, students will develop their knowledge and understanding of key legal concepts, as well as developing their ability to develop and use legal argumentation.
At Oxford College Summer School, our dynamic tutors ensure that the Law programme focuses on learning through communicating, meaning that all students participate actively in spoken English at all times.
In order to succeed as a lawyer, it is vital that students master the art of presenting their cases. Law reflects this by having the art of public speaking as the central focus of our syllabus. Throughout the programme, students will participate in an assignment in which they will develop a case for the defence, or prosecution, in a mock legal trial. This project will culminate in a full simulation of a legal trial, including judges, lawyers, barristers, prosecutors and defendants.
Law at Oxford College Summer School is the first step towards a future degree in Law. Such a degree can open the door to a variety of legal positions such as being a lawyer, a barrister, a solicitor and/or a judge. However, there are many more possibilities outside of legal firms open to those with Law degrees, such as work in public and private sectors, banking, finance, accounting, education, marketing, advertising, Public Relations, media, charity, not-for-profits, and NGO’s.
In addition to tuition, our tutors offer guidance on how to take the next steps into legal studies, as well as advice on the choice of career thereafter.
