By the end of the course students will have a greater understanding of key academic skills, developed their strategies for independent learning and broadened their knowledge of UK culture, by visiting some of the country’s top universities, as well as enjoying cultural excursions to local and national places of interest.
Oxford College Summer School’s University Preparation programme is a unique three week residential programme situated in the heart of historic Oxford.
We have created our University Preparation programme for students who wish to develop their study skills to a standard expected at university level study. By the end of the course students will have a greater understanding of key academic skills necessary for successful study at university level, and will have developed their strategies for independent learning. In addition, students will broaden their knowledge of British university culture by visiting some of the country’s top universities, as well as cultural excursions to local and national places of interest.
At Oxford College Summer School, our dynamic tutors ensure that the University Preparation programme focuses on learning through communicating, meaning that all students are asked to participate actively in spoken English at all times.
Throughout the course students will exercise their judgement about what they are reading. Critical thinking plays a vital role too and this is a central component of the University Preparation course. By reading and thinking critically, students will enhance their ability to form critical response in a seminar context. In addition, students will also develop their academic writing skills, such as structuring an essay, revising, editing and referencing skills.
Our University Preparation students will be shown how to develop key lecture, research and note-taking skills, to prepare them for the structure of university tuition. They will be shown how to record what they have learnt and participate in the lessons to the fullest of their ability, as well as developing research and independent study skills. Effective communication techniques are key to success at university. Therefore students will look at how to form and present clear and cogent arguments during discussion and debates in their seminars.
During the course students will look at how to submit a UCAS application, learn tips and techniques on what makes a good personal statement and understand what makes a successful interview in an academic context. Students will also benefit from personalised sessions with expert applications advisors, to assist them with university applications after their summer course.
